In this passage the word 'redeemed' is ga'al in the Hebrew language.  Ga'al is a custom relating to the buying back of something a person has lost due to helplessness, poverty or an act of violence.  Usually the person who redeems this item is related to the person who lost the item.  This person does it because they are financially able to do so for their weaker relative.
