Pastor Deborah's Health Tip #2

Nutrition

Nutrition is a constant concern for most people today.  Children are the one group of people who need a healthy diet the most and have it the least.  There are easy ways to enhance your child's diet with fruits and vegetables when they won't usually eat them.

I tricked my children into eating fruit and vegetables.  I would make green soup, orange soup, flavored oatmeal and colored casseroles.  I would simply food process a vegetable and use it for my liquid in the soup or casserole.  I would also take a fruit, food process it and add it to my oatmeal with cream or brown sugar for flavoring.  My kids loved our colored dishes and it was easy to get them to eat oatmeal with bananas or peaches in it.  I got my idea from my mom's oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar.

The trick is to offer variety, have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available for snacks.  Offer your family yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk for a snack or meal several times a day.  Have cold water in the refrigerator
available all day.  Encourage whole grains!

There are low fat, nutritious frozen meals in the frozen food aisle that children will love and have fun cooking for themselves in the microwave.  Always have snack-sized bags of healthy foods available to your children for
when they come in saying; "I'm hungry!" and its not time for the main meal.

Fruits, veggies, trail mixes, and graham crackers are healthy and easy to keep handy.
