In this passage, John is speaking of Gaius.  He was a man who was extremely generous and conducted himself in godly way.That is why John could pray for him to prosper spiritually in the same way that his soul was.  In this time period it was practice to wish others to be in good health.  However, in this case, John was sincerely wishing for Gaius to be of good health.  In other words, he was wishing him to be sound in body and in good health.  He was praying for the physical, material, and spiritual well-being of Gaius.   

    This is a perfect example of how GOD wants us to pray for those around us.  We are to be intercessors.  We pray that others might be blessed, protected, cared for, provided for, have the blessing of good health.  However, we do not pray for prosperity in another's life as the primary reason for prayer.  No, we pray that each of our lives have prosperity because we are committed, dedicated and act upon the principles that GOD has taught us through His Word.  When we have this type of quality at work in our life than we will see spiritual and physical success and health follow our prosperity of soul.
